This page gets you here: create news categories so a new article can be checked, and the public list can filter by them. Owners and site editors can both do this. With no category, Publish a news article cannot be saved.
Path
- Content Types → News (
/admin/news). - Click Categories (
/admin/news/categories). - In the add-category block at the top, enter a name and a slug, then submit.
- Existing rows: change the name or slug and save from the bottom toolbar. Drag the left column to reorder.
Add one
The screen says the name and the slug must both be unique on the site. Drag the left column to reorder. On a multilingual site, fill each locale’s display name side by side.
| Field | Required | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Yes | The text shown when you check a category in admin, and in the public filter. |
| URL slug | Yes | The last segment of the category page. Lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens, for example product-update. |
The public category page is usually /{news URL prefix}/category/{category slug}. You can copy the public link next to the row.
On success, a notice says the category was added.
Edit, duplicate, delete, reorder
| Action | What it does |
|---|---|
| Change name / slug | Edit the row, then save from the bottom toolbar (leaving unsaved warns you). |
| Duplicate a category | Copy one, then change the name and slug. |
| Delete | The category leaves the list. Articles still on it should be checked onto another category first, so the public filter still matches. |
| Drag to reorder | Drag the left column. Order saves on its own (the whole table does not lock). |
You cannot uncheck an article’s last category (after publish it still needs at least one). A bulk “remove categories” that would leave zero categories skips that row.
How to check
- The new category appears on the category list, with the right slug.
- Open Add article. Basic can check this category.
- After you publish one article, the category page or the list block shows it when filtered to that category.
- Multilingual: switch locale and see whether an empty name falls back in a sensible way.
When it gets stuck
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| It asks for a category name | The name is empty. |
| Cannot save, or the slug conflicts | The name or slug is already used. Pick another. |
| The article editor has nothing to check | You have not added one yet, or you are on the wrong site. |
| The public category page is 404 | The slug changed, the prefix changed, or the list page / route is not wired up. |
