This page gets you here: page field settings are the shared form for every page on the site. Most day-to-day edits do not belong here.
Where: Content Types → Pages → Page field settings at the top right (the type settings for this site’s pages). By default only an owner can see it.
Three different jobs
| What you want | Where |
|---|---|
| Change one page’s title, body, SEO, or publish state | Open that page. See Add a page and publish it |
| Change one page’s section layout (hero, image and text) | The full-screen page editor |
| Add the same field on every page’s edit screen (a site-wide subtitle or hero image, for example) | Page field settings on this page |
A new About page does not start in field settings. Fields are structure, not the content of one page.
When you should come here
- The site was set up so every page fills the same set of data (a header banner, a summary), and the section editor should not be the only source.
- TimTech or the theme already drives the public site from these fields, and you need to add or change one field.
Do not add a site-wide field just to put one extra paragraph on this page. Use that page’s body, or a section.
How an owner changes it
- On the page list, press Page field settings.
- The screen is like editing fields on a custom content type: fields on the left, and the code, display name, type, and required flag on the right. The detail is in Edit a type's fields (here the title may be about the page field structure).
- Save at the bottom. After that, every page’s detail shows these fields, and you fill in that page’s values.
A single page can also override a field with the same code under page setup (follow the note on the screen when there is one). The order of the site-wide fields is changed in this setting, not by rearranging one page.
Be careful
- After a field code is saved, change it rarely. Public layouts often read values by that code.
- Changing the type can drop values on old pages that no longer fit.
- Before you delete a field, check that no page still uses it. If you are not sure, ask TimTech first.
- These are not the fields for news, docs, or a custom type. Those live in each module’s type settings.
Check
- After you save, open any existing page. The detail should show the new field.
- Fill one in and publish. If that layout reads this field, the public site should show it. If the layout is not wired to this code, the admin can hold a value and the public site will not grow it on its own.
When it sticks
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| There is no Page field settings | You are not an owner. Ask an owner to change the structure. You fill in each page. |
| You added a field and the public site did not change | The layout may not use this code. Use a section, or ask TimTech to wire the layout. |
| You mixed it up with a custom type | Custom types are a different list (jobs, a product catalog, and similar). See Custom content types, in brief. |
