This page gets you to structured fields on a custom content type, so the entry editor shows the matching form.
Only owners can change them. If an editor sees that the type has no fields yet, ask the owner to do this page first.
Before you start
- The custom type already exists. See Create a content type.
- Do not try to add type-level fields on built-in news or docs. Those screens say field definitions are not available. Site-wide page fields live on the page list, under page field settings. See Set page fields.
Path
- Content Types → open the type → Type Settings (or stay on the same form while you are creating the type).
- Scroll to Field Definitions (custom types; page types say “page field structure” instead).
- Pick a field on the left, edit it on the right, then Save at the bottom. Success says “Saved”.
Add a field
- If the list is empty, click Add field.
- If tabs already exist, use Add a field to this tab on that tab.
- The new field is selected. Edit it on the right:
| Item | What it means |
|---|---|
| Field key | How the system names the field. It starts with a lowercase letter and uses only a–z, 0–9, and underscore. A new field avoids keys already in use. After save, change it as rarely as you can. Detail layouts usually read values by this key. |
| Display Name | The label on the entry form, such as “Title” or “Photo”. |
| Type | See the table below. Changing the type can clear data that no longer fits. Check first. |
| Required | Must be filled before publish. A draft may stay empty. Publish is blocked if a required field is missing. |
| Needs translation | Multilingual sites only. On: the entry editor gets language tabs. Empty falls back to the primary language. |
The screen notes that the field key is written to the database on save. To show a field on the public detail page, insert the matching dynamic field in Design Detail Page Layout, or map it from a list section.
Tabs such as Basic, Media, and Other keep the entry form from becoming one long column. The entry editor follows those tabs.
Dropdown, radio, and multi-select need options on the right: the values editors choose from.
A repeater lets one entry hold several groups of sub-fields, such as several certificates. Sub-fields have their own keys and types. Keep them few.
Which type to pick
| On screen | What the editor sees | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Text | One line | Job title, phone |
| Multi-line text | A longer plain text | A short intro |
| Rich text | Formatted body | A long introduction |
| Number | A number | Years of experience, a sort helper |
| Image | Upload, or pick one from the library | A portrait |
| Gallery | Several images | Thumbnails of work |
| Icon (icon library) | An icon from the library, or your own | A feature icon |
| Dropdown | Pick one | A department |
| Radio | Pick one | A few exclusive choices |
| Multi-select | Pick several | Skill tags |
| Yes / No | A switch | Show on the homepage or not |
| Date / time | A date and time | A start date |
| Link | An on-site or external link | A personal site, a booking page |
| Repeater | A group of sub-fields you can repeat | Certificates, time slots |
Images and galleries use the site-wide picker. See Upload, or pick from the library. New uploads land in a folder named after the type's display name.
Delete a field, or change its key
- Remove a field: existing values on entries may go with it, and the public spot goes blank. Remove it only when nothing still depends on it.
- Changing the field key is like creating a new field. Values on the old key do not move across. After launch, treat the key as nearly fixed.
- Keys must be unique inside one field definition. If a key matches a site-wide page field, saving may overwrite that shared key (the screen warns you). When in doubt, keep the key the form generated.
How to check
- Save Type Settings.
- Open Add Entry. You should see the new display name and the right control.
- Save a draft, open it again, and the values are still there.
- If a detail layout exists: insert the dynamic field and preview an entry that already has data.
When it sticks
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| No field-definition area | This is a built-in type. You cannot add fields here. Create a custom type instead. |
| Save fails because the key is duplicated | Change the field key, or remove the duplicate. |
| The entry form still lacks the new field | Did you save Type Settings? Reload the entry editor. |
| The public detail page does not show the value | The field has a value and the entry is published, and you still need a dynamic field on the detail layout, or a check of the list section. |
| An editor sees no form at all | The owner has not added fields yet. |
