This page gets you to categories for this content type, so the entry editor can tick them and public lists can filter.
Owners and editors can maintain categories by default. How an entry ticks them is in Add and publish an entry.
This is not the same as news categories. A CPT entry can be published with no category ticked. It simply will not show up when someone filters by that category.
Path
- Content Types → open the type, on “Display name|List”.
- Click Manage Categories. The title looks like “{display name}|Categories”.
- Under Add category, enter the name and URL slug, then submit.
- Existing rows: change the name or slug and save with the bottom bar. Drag the left column to reorder.
The page explains that these are the public filter categories for this content type, and that the entry editor can assign more than one.
Add one
| Field | Required | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Yes | The label editors tick and visitors see in filters. On a multilingual site, fill each language side by side. |
| URL slug | Yes | Lowercase letters, numbers, hyphens, or underscores. It is the filter key. Change it rarely after launch. |
On success you get a confirmation that the category was added. Viewers see a read-only notice and cannot add or edit.
Edit, duplicate, delete, reorder
| Action | What it means |
|---|---|
| Change the name or slug | Edit the row, then save with the bottom bar. |
| Duplicate | Copy one and then change it. |
| Delete | The category goes away. Entries that had it lose that tag. Tick another if you still need one. |
| Drag to reorder | Drag the left column. The order is saved for you. |
On the entry and on the public site
- The entry editor has a Categories block. You can tick more than one. The hint says to create them under Manage Categories first. An entry with none ticked still publishes. It just will not fall into that category when the public site filters.
- The page section custom content list (automatic) can filter by category. See The full-screen page editor.
How to check
- The new row appears on Manage Categories.
- Open an entry, tick the category, and save.
- A public list section filtered to that category shows only published entries that have it ticked.
- An entry with no category: the detail page is still there. It does not appear in a category-filtered list.
When it sticks
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| “Please enter a category name” | The name is empty. |
| The entry form has no Categories block | This type has no categories yet, or you opened the wrong type. |
| A list section filtered by category is empty | The entry is not ticked, it is still a draft, or the section points at the wrong content type. |
