Custom content types (CPT) let you define a structured kind of content beyond news and docs. Faculty profiles, locations, and spec cards are the usual cases.
If the admin has no Content Types entry, or you cannot add a custom type, the platform decides which doors stay open. Ask a platform admin. When the sidebar does show the entry, the label on your site is the one that counts.
Two layers: the type and the entry
| Layer | Who looks after it | What they do |
|---|---|---|
| Type (the structure) | Owners, by default | Create the type, its fields, categories, and the detail layout |
| Entry (the content) | Owners and editors can both write, by default | Add, edit, and publish one record |
If an editor cannot see Add Type or the field settings, that is expected. The owner builds the type first. Editors then fill in the entries.
Built-in types (site pages, news, docs) are not ordinary custom types. You cannot reshape their fields the way you would for faculty or locations. The steps in this folder are for tenant custom types.
Where to go in the admin
| Where | What it is for |
|---|---|
/admin/site-content-types | The Content Types list |
| Add Type, top right | Create a type (owners) |
| Open a type | That type's entry list |
| Add Entry | Write one piece of content |
| Type Settings on the entry list | Change the name, type slug, and field definitions (owners) |
| Manage Categories | Filter categories for this type on the public site |
| Design Detail Page Layout | What one public page looks like (owners) |
| Content relations, top right of the content-type list | Define relations between CPT and news, and show a related list on the detail layout |
The Content Types block in the sidebar can hide a shortcut per type. With the shortcut off, you can still open the type from the content-type list.
How it shows up on the public site
- One detail page:
/{type slug}/{entry URL slug}. Older/c/...paths redirect to the new path. - A list: usually a page section, custom content list (automatic) or a dynamic list, pointed at the right type. There is no fixed site-wide list URL.
Keep the type slug and the entry slugs stable and readable. Change them rarely after launch.
In the entry editor's SEO block you can turn off “allow search engines to index” (on by default). Off means that entry stays out of the sitemap and is marked noindex, in every language. See SEO for the whole site.
You can also turn off the entry's own page link. Visitors then cannot open that detail URL. Use this when the item should appear in a list but not as its own page.
A workable order
- The owner plans the fields, whether you need categories, and what the detail page should look like. See Create a content type.
- Create the type, then Edit a type's fields, Manage content categories, and Design the detail layout. To link types to each other, or to news, see Relate content across types.
- Editors add and publish entries against those fields.
- On a page, add a custom content list (automatic) section, or put the detail URL in the menu or a button. See The full-screen page editor.
Things to watch
- Once a field is in use, deleting or renaming it can change existing entries and the public page. Back up, or check with the platform, before a large change.
- On a multilingual site, the entry editor has language tabs. An empty translation falls back to the primary language. See Translate the content.
- Deleting a whole type deletes every entry under it. That cannot be undone.
