This page gets you to a new custom content type: the structure, with no first entry yet.
Field details are in Edit a type's fields. Writing the content is in Add and publish an entry.
Before you start
- Your role is owner (or someone from the platform helping you). Editors do not have Add Type.
- The sidebar shows Content Types (CPT is enabled). If it does not, see How modules are turned on.
Path
- Open Content Types in the sidebar (
/admin/site-content-types). - Click Add Type.
- Fill in Basic. You can save first, then add fields under Field Definitions.
- Save at the bottom. On success the message is “Type created”.
After saving, add entries from “Display name|List”.
What to fill in under Basic
The form is roughly Basic, Advanced, and Field Definitions. On a new type, get Basic right first.
| Field | Required | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Display Name | Yes | The name on the admin list and the sidebar shortcut, such as “Faculty” or “Locations”. |
| Type Slug (for URL) | Yes | The public path prefix. It must start with a lowercase letter and use only a–z, 0–9, and underscore. instructor becomes /instructor/the-entry-slug. |
| Entry Mode | Yes | Multiple entries (default) or Single entry (at most one for this type, site-wide). |
| Show in admin sidebar | Optional | On: this type appears under Content Types on the left. Off: you can still open it from the content-type list. |
| Admin Sidebar Icon | Optional | Only the icon in the left menu. |
About the type slug
- Change it rarely after launch. A new slug changes every public URL
/{type slug}/…. - Do not use reserved names such as
news, portfolio, admin, orc. They collide with fixed routes. - Do not reuse a slug that already belongs to a site page.
Many entries, or just one
| Mode | Fits | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Multiple entries (default) | Faculty, locations, stories, added one by one | A list, plus a detail page for each |
| Single entry | One settings-style record for the whole site | If you already have several entries, you cannot switch to single. Delete down to at most one first |
Single-entry types cannot duplicate an entry from the list.
What you can do after saving
On that type's entry list (the title looks like “Faculty|List”) the usual buttons are:
| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| Add Entry | Start writing |
| Type Settings | Change the name, slug, and fields (this page and Edit a type's fields) |
| Manage Categories | See Manage content categories |
| Design Detail Page Layout | See Design the detail layout |
How to check
- The new type appears on the content-type list.
- Opening it shows an empty entry list (or, in single mode, a prompt to create the one entry).
- As owner, open Type Settings again. The name and slug are correct.
- With an editor account: they can open the entry list, and they cannot add a type.
When it sticks
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| No Add Type | You are not the owner, or the platform has not enabled CPT. |
| “Please enter the type display name” | The display name is empty. |
| “Please enter a valid type slug…” | It does not start with a letter, or it uses something other than lowercase letters, numbers, and underscore. |
| The slug hits a reserved name | Pick another slug. |
| Delete the type | Delete on Type Settings removes the type and every entry. That cannot be undone. Built-in types cannot be deleted. |
