This page gets you here: one kind of colleague can no longer change commerce (or foreclosure, settings, and similar), and everyone else is unchanged.
Invites and role changes are in Invite and manage members. Only an owner can do this.
You are changing the default ability of that role for the whole site (every editor shares one set, every viewer shares another). You are not making an exception for one email.
Where
Role permissions at the top right of Members (/admin/settings/members/permissions).
The title is member role permissions. It says you can only narrow editors and viewers, and you cannot go above the platform template.
Change history at the top right shows recent permission changes on this site (time, role, old value, new value).
How to change it
- On the tabs at the top, choose Editor or Viewer.
- Abilities are grouped, for example content, commerce, bookings, foreclosure, subscriptions, static site hosting, marketing, settings, and AI SEO.
- Each row can be:
| Level | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Write | They can see it and change it (only if the platform cap allows it) |
| Read-only | They can see it and cannot save |
| None | The sidebar often hides it, or opening it sends them away |
Each row shows the platform cap (the highest level this item can reach) and whether it inherits the platform or is overridden. The menu will not offer a level above the cap.
- Press Save. A success notice confirms the role permissions were saved.
- Ask a colleague in that role to reload the admin (sign out and back in if needed) and try again.
A common use: turn off commerce or foreclosure writes for editors for a while, without affecting owners.
Restore the platform default
Press Reset to the platform default. After you confirm, every override for the role on the current tab is cleared. A success notice says how many were cleared. Owner permissions are not changed on this page.
Keep in mind
- You cannot use this page to make an editor “the same as an owner” (for example, inviting members or changing the brand). The platform cap for those abilities is already lower.
- A module missing from the sidebar can also mean the platform has not turned the module on. That is not a row on this page. See How modules are turned on.
- Adding or deleting pages, and the full-screen visual editor, may still be owners only even when an editor is Write. See Sign-in and roles.
Check
- With a test editor account, a module set to None disappears from the sidebar or cannot be saved.
- An owner account can still use that module.
- Change history shows the change you just made.
When it sticks
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| You want Write and it is not in the menu | The platform cap is read-only or none. You cannot open it further. |
| You changed it and the colleague can still edit | They are actually an owner, they have not reloaded, or you edited the other tab (editor / viewer). |
| You changed it and commerce is still missing from the sidebar | The module is not turned on. Contact the platform. Permissions cannot turn it on. |
| Someone who is not an owner cannot open this page | That is expected. |
