This article completes: Allow visitors in English, Japanese, and other versions to see images in their language.
Suitable for situations where images contain text (slogans, descriptions, button labels). The language must be selected, see How to Configure Locales.
Which Images Can Be Changed
| Location | Changeable Images |
|---|---|
| Page Section | Images within the section, video covers, section background images, each image in the image list (e.g., carousel, logo wall) |
| Message | List cover image |
| Custom Content | Image field of the item (the field must have 'Requires Translation' enabled) |
The site name logo is set separately in the basic settings by language.
Page Section
- Select the section in the Page Editor.
- Switch to the language tab for the image you want to change at the top of the editing panel.
- Click upload or select an image from the gallery in the image field. The thumbnail in the dashed box is the current image for the default language, provided for reference only, and will not be saved in this language.
- Save and publish the page.
Background type (none, solid color, photo) is shared across all languages. Changing it to 'none' or 'solid color' will clear the background images for all languages.
Message Cover
- Open the message you want to edit and switch to the language tab for the image you want to change at the top.
- Upload the cover for that language in 'List Cover Image'. The dashed box is the cover for the default language, provided for reference.
- Save the message.
The message list on the front desk, the homepage message block, related articles, article page cover, and social sharing images will all use the cover in that language.
Custom content images
- Open the entry you want to edit and switch to the language tab for the image change.
- Upload or select the image for that language from the gallery in the image field. If the language version does not appear in the field, go to the field settings for that content type and enable 'Requires Translation'.
- Save the entry.
What will be displayed when no upload occurs?
When no upload is made for that language, the front end will use the default language image, and no broken images will appear.
There is another rule for message covers and custom content images: if the website has English enabled, and other languages like Japanese have not uploaded images, it will first use the English image, and if that is not available, it will use the default language image, following the same display rules as the title. If you want the Japanese page to display the default language image, please select the same default language image in the Japanese tab.
How to verify
- Switch the front end to the second language and open the page or message with the newly changed image.
- Confirm that the image displayed is in that language.
- Switch back to the default language and confirm that the original image has not been changed.
Common Issues
| Situation | What to Do |
|---|---|
| The front end still shows the old image | Confirm that it has been uploaded and saved on the correct language tab, and the page has been published; you can refresh the page after publishing. |
| The default language image has also been changed | Stay on the default language tab while uploading. Switch to the correct language tab to re-upload, then return to the default language to change back to the original image. |
| The image alt text has not changed | The alt text will be brought in when selecting the image from the library; you can edit the description of that image in the library. |
