What a public visitor sees
- The header may show a language switcher (it depends on the layout).
- URLs follow the URL prefix strategy (for example, default Chinese is
/about, English is/en/about). - Search-engine language tags are generated for you. There is no page where you edit an hreflang table by hand.
A translation you leave empty falls back to the default language on the public site, so the page is not blank. The admin often says that an empty field will show the default-language text.
Can you change the default language?
If the site already has published content, the default language is usually locked. Contact the platform if it needs to change. A new site with nothing published is more likely to allow a change (trust whether the screen lets you).
