Find a promising niche market

Want to start a new business but don't know which product will become a hot industry in the future, with better profit opportunities to help you earn more?

Then Google Trends is a great option. Enter any product you want in the search bar, set the time range to "2004 - present," and look at its search interest over the years.

Let me use a recently popular product, "wireless earbuds," as an example.

You can see that the market for "wireless earbuds" rose rapidly after Apple's AirPods went on sale in 2016, and headphone makers all started making their own wireless earbuds.

Consumers also came to see wireless earbuds in a new light. More and more people gave up wired headphones, gradually changing the way they listen to music.

If you spotted this sharp upward trend, even if you're not a headphone maker, you could start a similarly lucrative "wireless earbud accessories" business.

But a market with similar potential doesn't necessarily show an obvious growth trend. Take the "women's clothing market," which has steady demand every year.

You can see that search interest in "women's clothing" has always been stable, even trending upward, with almost no sharp short-term swings.

A market like this is mature and stable. It has solid profit potential and almost no risk of decline, because demand is steady: there's demand for "women's clothing" every year.

So which industries have a worrying outlook? Here's an obvious example: the "magazine" industry.

You can see that search interest in "magazines" has kept falling since 2005. As the internet and mobile devices became widespread, fewer and fewer people read magazines, so the whole industry kept declining.

Likewise, by thinking about why the "magazine" industry declined, you can look for the emerging industries that replaced those reading habits. This is another way to find a promising niche market.

Find a product angle in related topics

If you've already found the market you want to develop but have no idea which product category to launch, "Related topics" is a great way to find out.

Just enter your market in the search bar, set the time range to "Past 12 months," then scroll down the page to find the "Related topics" section on the left.

With "Related topics," you can see which related topics are rising in search interest and find a suitable angle among these popular topics.

For example, I'm interested in the travel industry and want to develop a "Taipei travel" niche market. I can enter "Taipei travel" in the search bar and then scroll down to Related topics.

As the image above shows, over the past 12 months, "Jiufen" and "Grand Hyatt Taipei" were the topics people searched for most recently.

So I could plan "Jiufen travel" tours or write review articles on the "Grand Hyatt Taipei," so more people searching for these topics can see my company.

You can also combine the rising topics ranked 6 to 15 to find out what people love to search for and identify your main products.

From the "Related topics" for Taipei travel, you can see that many of the top 15 are searches for "accommodation," so you can launch accommodation-related deals or promotions accordingly.

Do keyword research with related queries

With keyword research, you can identify searchers' intent and know what kind of information they're looking for, then create products or services that meet their needs.

Following the steps of the previous method, you'll find "Related queries" to the right of Related topics. These are keywords people also search for when searching a given term.

For example, when I search for "suit," I can see the term "rental" appear in the "Related queries" section.

That means more and more people are interested in "suit rental" services. If you're in a related industry, you can add information about this service to attract more customers.

Note, however, that Google Trends only shows trends over a period of time, not the search volume of these terms, so you can't do more precise keyword research with it.

So if you want more detailed keyword research steps, see this article: Google keyword rankings

Promote your products based on seasonal trends

Google Trends can show not only long-term trends but also seasonal changes for many products and industries.

We need to use Google Trends to understand a product's seasonality, so we can sell more during the peak season and earn more profit.

So when exactly is the best time to promote? Let me use "sunscreen," which people use in summer, as an example.

As the image above shows, over the past 12 months, searches for "sunscreen" start climbing sharply around May, and June to August is the peak search season.

Extending the time range to the past five years, you can see that searches for "sunscreen" do start rising in May and June every year. So every May and June, you can start actively promoting your products and spending money and effort on them.

So what if you want to make a profit during sunscreen's off-season too?

You can use another seasonal product to make up for a single product's off-season, giving you a chance to profit then too. Here, let's take "hand cream," a winter bestseller, as an example.

You can see that searches for "hand cream" start increasing at the end of November each year, and December through February of the following year is the peak for "hand cream" searches.

The trend over the past five years shows the same thing: November is clearly when sales and advertising start, making it the best time to begin promoting and advertising the product.

So May and November are the golden selling seasons for these two types of skincare products, and they're key to whether a product's awareness and sales succeed.

Boost SEO results based on seasonality

Simply put, SEO is a way to raise an article's Google ranking to the first page.

By doing SEO and using Google Trends to understand a product's seasonality, you can update your articles at the right time, keep your content fresh, and get more search traffic to your articles.

For example, say I'm a travel agency and have written an article titled "Recommended cherry blossom viewing spots in Taiwan." I can use the search interest in the term "cherry blossom viewing" to decide when to update my article.

You can see that search interest peaks in mid-February every year, because cherry blossoms in Taiwan bloom from mid-February to mid-March. But we need to update our content well before that.

So in January, I add this year's new cherry blossom viewing spots to my article and delete old information that's no longer needed, giving readers the latest, most accurate information while improving the article's Google ranking.

Write content that matches the latest trends

However, not every popular search term is seasonal. Sometimes a topic suddenly becomes hot, traffic rises with it, and related businesses get a lot of exposure as well.

You can find these hot terms in the "Recently trending" section at the bottom of the Google Trends homepage.

As the image above shows, Apple's AirPods Max had just launched and got more than 20,000 searches in just a few days. If you're a consumer electronics company, you could write an article analyzing the features of the AirPods Max.

Also, because December has many holidays, "December global holidays" was searched heavily. This is a classic example of seasonality combined with a trending topic.

By writing news in real time, you have a chance to catch the holiday surge in searches and the buying frenzy, helping you achieve brand exposure and sales.

Find niche products by region

Beyond the characteristics mentioned above, search volume for a term can also vary greatly by "region."

If you're in the export trade, you especially need to compare how searches for terms vary across regions to find the best time to sell.

Here's a simple example: for the same term, "necklace," you can clearly see the difference in search interest between Taiwan and Hong Kong.

You can see that search interest in "necklace" in Taiwan has been rising year after year, while in Hong Kong it hasn't done as well as in Taiwan. So you can infer that necklaces may sell better in Taiwan.

Of course, this is only a rough comparison. In a real comparison, you need to account for local terminology and compare different terms multiple times to get a more accurate prediction.

Monitor your competitors by comparing data

Google Trends can search not only a single term but also compare multiple terms at once, so you can use this data to assess competitors and stay competitive.

Take the two big sneaker brands, "nike" and "adidas," and compare their data from 2004 to the present.

You can see that the two brands' search volumes were originally close, but starting in 2012, Nike gradually pulled ahead.

If you're Nike, you need to make sure you always stay ahead; if you're adidas, you need to start analyzing your competitor's marketing and come up with more ways to improve and close the gap.

You can also analyze the relationship between different products by looking at how their data rises and falls.

Like the comparison of "mobile phones" and "computers" in the image above: as smartphones became fully featured and could even replace many computer functions, searches for computers started to fall, while phones moved in the opposite direction, growing strongly until the lines eventually crossed.

Increase YouTube views

Although Google Trends is mostly used for web pages, YouTube can also use this data to improve how videos show up in search results.

But first, you should know that besides good enough content, the timing of publishing also matters for YouTube traffic: YouTube search results show recent videos and videos with many views.

So by using the method mentioned above, finding a term's seasonality and uploading before the search peak arrives, you can get relatively more traffic.

Choose questions people commonly want to ask, and that they'd want answered by watching YouTube. For example: making cards.

You can see that searches for "cards" peak clearly in certain periods, so you can upload videos before these periods.

Now look at YouTube's search results: the first result is a new video uploaded only a week ago, followed by videos with quite high view counts.

So using Google Trends to find the best time to publish great content is something you must do before uploading a video.

Find the best time to run ads

Finally, you can use Google Trends to find products whose purchase trends are very clear, and use these clear peaks in search interest to find the right time to run ads.

For example, over the past five years, November has been the peak search month for "robot vacuums," making it the best time to advertise.

By running ads precisely, you can spend less money and time and gain more sales revenue and brand exposure.

Conclusion

Although Google Trends doesn't have many features, each piece of data means something different, and how people use it varies.

I hope that after reading this article, you can use these 10 methods to use this tool more skillfully for all kinds of marketing activities.
