Summary

Before an SEO course, you need the idea itself. The basic concepts and the terms that keep coming up, so later lessons have something to attach to.

Before starting an SEO tutorial, you need a basic understanding of SEO concepts. So in this article, I'll introduce the basic concepts of SEO and walk you through what some important SEO terms mean.

After reading this article, you'll have a systematic understanding of SEO. This will help you with future SEO courses and let you apply SEO strategies and techniques more solidly.

What is SEO?

The basic concept of SEO: keyword rankings

(Search engines here can mean Google, Baidu, or Bing, but since Google holds the largest share of the search engine market, the SEO discussed below focuses on the market mainstream: Google SEO.)

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization.

Simply put, SEO means targeting specific keywords and writing relevant web content so that your page ranks on the first page of Google's search results. The whole thing is a process of "keyword ranking."

For example, here's what comes up when I search Google for "diet pills":

When you search the keyword "diet pills," you find lots of the information you want to know, and websites that provide relevant, complete information appear on Google's first page.

As the image above shows, search results fall into two types: keyword ads and organic search results. Getting the page we want to rank to appear on the first page of the "organic search results" is what we call Google SEO.

That's the basic concept of how SEO works.

The core concept of SEO: relevant, rich content

Once you have the basic concept of SEO, you also need to understand the core concept behind SEO success. Most people overlook it, and that's why their SEO results fall short of expectations.

Google became the largest search engine company because of a great mission: to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful.

So as people learning Google SEO, we need to find a way to know what people using Google want to search for.

Only by understanding what searchers are thinking can we write rich, well-illustrated articles. The better an article matches search intent, the higher its chances of reaching Google's first page, and the more successful your Google SEO will be.

Why does Google SEO matter?

If your Google SEO succeeds, you'll get the following benefits:

  1. Lower monetary cost
  2. High search volume
  3. More product sales
  4. Greater brand awareness
  5. Long-term growth

Lower monetary cost

As Facebook ads and YouTube ads get more and more expensive, SEO has become a comparatively much cheaper form of online marketing.

Apart from the basic costs of building a website and buying a domain, compared with ad budgets that can easily run to hundreds of thousands of NT dollars a year, you'll find that doing SEO costs very little money.

High search volume

Given that Google handles hundreds of millions of searches every day, you can see how important it is to capture that search volume.

In terms of search volume, the combined monthly searches for the two keywords "Taipei attractions" and "Taipei day trip" can reach up to 200,000.

If you get your page to rank on the first page for these two keywords, you'll save a lot on advertising and gain plenty of search traffic at the same time.

More product sales

Now that online shopping makes up an ever larger share of purchases, high search volume means your products are more likely to sell. But beyond selling products, you can also achieve many goals you might not expect.

For example, downloads, subscriptions, likes, and shares can all reach higher conversion through high search volume. The more mature your website becomes, the more related techniques you can use.

Greater brand awareness

Once your website has a solid structure, over time more and more people will reach your website and get to know your brand.

With the awareness built up online, we can do more, and marketing work that used to be hard becomes much easier.

Combining these advantages, Google SEO becomes an ideal business model for startups and entrepreneurs who want to run a business online.

Long-term growth

Moreover, with Google holding more than 70% of the market and continuing to improve its features and influence, Google will remain the most commonly used search engine for a long time, so SEO as a marketing approach will also dominate the market for a very long time.

Types of Google SEO

SEO actually covers a wide range of optimizations, but it can be roughly divided into different types. In this section, I'll introduce these SEO terms.

  1. By inside or outside the website: on-page SEO / off-page SEO
  2. By what is optimized: content SEO / technical SEO
  3. By the legitimacy of the methods: black hat SEO / white hat SEO

On-page SEO / off-page SEO

Divided by inside or outside the website, optimizations within the website are called on-page SEO, and those outside the website are called off-page SEO.

On-page SEO includes visual design, copywriting, building internal links, and the quality of the user experience. Factors within the website all fall into this category.

Off-page SEO includes the number of links, link authority, valid links, comments, and share counts. Factors outside the website all fall into this category.

Content SEO / technical SEO

Divided by what is optimized, work on page content is called content SEO, and work that helps Google read your website is called technical SEO.

Content SEO includes keyword research, copywriting, categories, headings, images, and videos. Anything related to content creation falls into this category.

Technical SEO includes sitemaps for web crawlers, SSL certificates, and improving website speed. Anything technical falls into this category.

White hat SEO / black hat SEO

Divided by method, SEO that follows Google's rules, is legitimate, and is used by most people is called white hat SEO, while methods that deceive search engines are called black hat SEO.

All the SEO methods mentioned above are legitimate white hat SEO. Black hat SEO violates Google's rules: at best, your pages won't be ranked by Google; at worst, your website will be removed. So if you want to run a website for the long term, it's best to stay away from it.

14 key points of Google SEO optimization

Now that you have a basic understanding of SEO, I've listed 14 key points of Google SEO optimization following the steps of SEO. Each step is an important part of SEO success and can increase your chances of succeeding.

Keyword ranking research

Keyword ranking research is the foundation of SEO and a key step in understanding what searchers are thinking. Through keyword research, you can find out how often people search certain terms, and how hard it is to rank for them.

You need to find keywords that are as easy as possible while still having a certain number of searches, because these keywords let you see good results faster. This is also an important strategy that many people use.

There are many keyword research tools on the market, and I recommend Google Keyword Planner, which can meet the basic needs of keyword research.

Meta title / meta description

The meta title and meta description matter because a well-written title can earn more clicks, and a concise description helps readers grasp the article's summary faster.

More importantly, the meta title and meta description are key signals Google uses to judge a website's content and relevance. Articles with a meta title and meta description are easier for search engines to identify and rank.

A good meta title should usually be no more than 30 Chinese characters, and a meta description no more than 80 Chinese characters. I also include my article's keyword in the meta title and meta description and briefly summarize the article, so readers can easily understand what it's about and are drawn to click.

Further reading: If you want to see how your title and description actually display on the page, you can use a tool called SERP Simulator.

Subheadings / article structure

Beyond a good title, a rigorous, well-organized text structure helps readers read faster and improves their experience.

Adding a subheading (heading) to each section lets readers grasp the gist of each section from the subheading without reading word by word, and it also makes it easier for Google to understand the article's hierarchy and structure.

For a detailed article, I usually use large, medium, and small headings, and sometimes add variations such as Step 1 and Step 2, making my content easier to understand and giving the article more structure.

URL structure

Because only English letters, numbers, and certain symbols can be displayed in a URL, any URL containing Chinese or other characters turns the URL structure into garbled text. Garbled text greatly reduces how professional a website looks, and Google is less likely to use it.

So a good URL structure, meaning a short URL made up only of English letters and symbols and containing the keyword, must be easy for both Google and users to recognize. That's why I usually use the article's keyword plus its main idea as the page's URL.

Image alt text

Google's AI has no eyes and can't recognize what an image is meant to convey, and even humans can easily be misled by images.

So adding alt text to images lets Google get the image's message from the text the author enters, successfully interpret the image, and increase the chances of the article's content being found in search.

Internal / external links

Internal links are links whose URL points to another page on the same website. For example, a link to the TimTech homepage is an internal link.

External links are links whose URL points to a page on a different website. For example, a link to the Wikipedia homepage is an external link.

Internal and external links matter because they add information to our pages, guide readers to important pages, and connect the content of different pages.

Google also evaluates a page's value based on the number of internal links and how often they're clicked. The better the links are placed and the more people click them, the better your chances of ranking higher.

Website speed

Data on page speed shows that readers usually won't stay on a page that takes too long to load, let alone click any of its links.

The time users spend on a page and the number of times they click its links are key factors in Google rankings. So if you want to strengthen your SEO, first think carefully about how to improve page speed.

To see your page speed score, try PageSpeed Insights. (The score is a useful reference but not absolute; you should still optimize based on the speed you actually experience.)

Mobile compatibility

In an era where everyone has a phone, phones now account for the vast majority of browsing, shopping, subscribing, and other consumer activity. So if your website is still desktop-only and hasn't been upgraded to a mobile version, not only will readers find it hard to keep reading, but Google will also be quick to exclude pages that have no mobile version.

That's why mobile friendliness is so important. You can use Google's Mobile-Friendly Test: enter your URL in the field, click Test, and you'll get the result right away.

SSL certificates (HTTPS)

An SSL certificate is a certification that ensures a web page is secure. As the internet has grown, more and more people log in on web pages, enter card numbers, and fill in private personal information, so security measures are needed to keep data from leaking.

Installing an SSL certificate makes your web pages more secure, preventing data loss and hacker intrusions, and it also makes Google trust your website, earning you better rankings. The most obvious sign of a page with an SSL certificate is a URL starting with "https" and a padlock icon.

Further reading: If you want to know more about SSL and HTTPS, see this article: What is HTTPS?

Sitemaps

A sitemap is a map made for Google. Its purpose is to help search engines find and index a website's content more easily, including text, images, and videos.

Through a sitemap, Google can discover the vast majority of your pages. This is very important for newly launched websites, or websites with lots of internal and external links.

Guest posts

Guest posting is a way to build links with other website owners and increase exposure by contributing articles. It's quite popular in the English-language market but less common in the Chinese-language market.

As mentioned above, external links matter for website rankings. With a guest post, you insert a link to your own website in the article you contribute, so your website gains an external link and improves its Google ranking score.

Guest posting is like a "mutually beneficial" relationship: the small website provides valuable content to the large website, and the large website includes a link back, giving the small website a chance to rank and gain exposure.

If you run a new website, writing guest posts can give you a faster ranking advantage.

Social media marketing

Social media marketing is one of the important parts of SEO. Simply put, it means "sharing" your web content to various social platforms, especially commonly used ones like Facebook, Instagram, and LINE.

At this stage, I usually first find Facebook groups related to my article and share valuable content with other users there. As long as your content is useful to them, it will easily be reshared.

If your content also keeps up with current events and trends, it can spread virally and bring in a lot of traffic. This can also improve your chances of ranking higher on Google.

Click rate / bounce rate / time on site

How do you know how well your SEO is working? You need to look at three important metrics: click rate, bounce rate, and average time on site.

Click rate is the percentage of people who see your title and click through to the article. The lower the click rate, the more you need to strengthen your title and make it more appealing.

Bounce rate is the percentage of visitors who leave after entering your website instead of clicking through to other pages on the same website. If a reader lands on my page A and leaves, the bounce rate is high; if a reader lands on page A and then goes on to page B, the bounce rate is low. Adding internal links appropriately helps lower the bounce rate.

Time on site depends on your page content. Usually, the richer, better illustrated, and easier to read the content, the longer people stay, and the more likely the article is to be judged as high value.

If you want to get these three metrics, you can use Google Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools, which provide lots of useful data for you to analyze.

Domain authority

Domain authority is a score your website gets after Google's algorithm analyzes it, combining all the SEO key points mentioned above.

The higher your domain authority, the more authoritative your website is, and the more Google trusts it. Usually, the older your website and the richer its content, the higher its authority, and the faster and better your new articles will rank.

In other words, as long as you properly complete the Google SEO key points above, your website's authority will naturally be higher.

Conclusion

This article went from explaining the basic concepts to breaking down the practical work of SEO optimization. I hope that after reading the whole article, you have a deeper, more systematic understanding of how to do SEO.
